Outlaws & Saints

Outlaws & Saints
I aged sixteen years and bottled up my fears
With a hole in my soul and my shoe
The Queen of my hometown seemed to hang around
A little longer than she needed to
And our city felt like a jail cell
And the liquor store a reservoir
But when that town fell asleep that's when we hit the street
'til there was no gas left in the car
Well we all would swear we'd make it out of here
And all our friends would say they knew us when
Now we're doing blow, and paying debts we owe
Asking forgiveness for our sins
While careers, divorces and babies steal all those bigger dreams
There's still a part of me that wants to be set free
Before I fall into that routine
Make me an outlaw, make me a saint
Just make me somebody, that never quit when all the shit came to call
I hear that Hometown Queen got caught up in the scene
And let some man tell her who to be
Yea she compromised more than she realized
But she was just to numb to see
That she hides her secrets away and
Keeps the key where it can't be found
While she breaks hearts like porcelain on the ground
Yea we break hearts just like porcelain on the ground

I'll Write the Sad Songs

I'll Write the Sad Songs
She sings songs from before I was born, and slightly out of key
She finds a way to be every cliche, but that's alright with me
Because I love the songs, that make me feel
Like someone else, knows what its like to reveal
All of the feelings that seem to make sense
So I'll write the sad songs....you write the hits
I give up when the going gets tough, it just comes naturally
And you may say I tuck my feelings away, but that's how I like to be
Because I like the songs, that won't get heard
Where I leave my hat, to hang on every word
A backbeat's no substitute for content
So I'll write the sad songs....you write the hits
We go together like sha-la-la-la, or Kurt and Courtney
One bad look away from ruining our day, but that's how we like to be
Because I love the songs, that make me see
That someone else, has had it way worse than me
Misery fuels my creative fits, so I'll write the sad songs
I'll write the sad songs
I'll write the sad songs

A Hymn with No Name

A Hymn with No Name
A drifter, with no place to roam
A mother, no child of her own
Keep me safe, but Lord keep me free
Give me faith, when I cannot see
A graveyard, not a rose on the ground
An ocean, no fish to be found
And as I lay me down to sleep
I'll just pray, I'll just pray my soul to keep
Give me shelter, when the water's high
Sing hallelujah with all your might

Out of Time

Out of Time
They paved the road down by the Amoco
Now its a parking lot in town
Twenty eight years of growing up
Just to be let down
Because the dreams I have stay dreams
Its not as simple, as it seems
So I'll just take the long way baby
As I drive through the night
Say goodbye to a city as another arrives
It sounds so eloquent on paper when you put it to rhyme
But the truth is maybe, I'm running out of time
I make a phone call home from a cracked payphone
And I give the same cliches
"Things are going great out here"
and "I am still okay"
But there's one thing I can't shake
If its a dream, then why can't I wake
So I'll just take the long way baby
As I drive through the night
Say goodbye to a city as another arrives
It sounds so eloquent on paper when you put it to rhyme
So I'll say goodnight under a blue stage light
And I'll kindly pay my bill
All the things that I have given up
To make the world stand still
But the dreams I had stayed dreams
Nothing's as simple, as it seems
So I'll just take the long way baby
As I drive through the night
Say goodbye to a city as another arrives
It sounds so eloquent on paper when you put it to rhyme
But the truth is maybe, I'm running out of time

Loners Society Charleston, South Carolina
Loners Society is the brain-child of Unusual Suspects and County Line Strangers’ primary songwriter/singer, Matt Megrue. While both of Megrue’s previous projects primarily emphasized their collective punk/country upbringings, the new EP from Loners Society takes that same honesty and sprinkles in a little bit of soul in what Megrue describes as, “southern-fried, indie rock and roll." ... more
